  • Marvin Windows Bring Historical Accuracy to Iconic Turrets Building in Maine

    Designed and built in 1895 as a massive summer cottage for John Emery, an American stage, film, radio and television actor, the Turrets Building at College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine was owned by the Emery family for nearly 65 years, before it passed through several hands. When the college purchased Turrets in 1973, it embarked on a series of renovations to restore the original condition of the building. Today, the Turrets is one of the most important examples of cottage-era architecture in Maine that is still open to the public.   • Transforming the Home of New York State’s Oldest Newspaper

    The Poughkeepsie Journal was founded in 1785 and is the oldest newspaper in New York state, third oldest in the country. The Journal operates out of a fieldstone Colonial Revival building that was built in 1941. After buying the building in 2009, new owners sought to maintain the historical integrity of the building, but they were also looking for low long-term maintenance costs. Marvin windows were selected to replace both the original single pane windows and the newer, but poorly matched windows.     The Deerfield Academy was founded in 1797 in Deerfield, Massachusetts and has over 90 buildings on its picturesque campus. Sit-down meals are one of the Academy’s most important traditions and attendance to the daily meals is mandatory for both boarding and day students. When a fire in the basement kitchen damaged the dining hall above, the school decided it was time for a major renovation.     The Housing Trust of Rutland County apartment complex in Brandon, VT is a great story of transformation.   • Modern Technology Preserves Historic Building

    Window replacement at 311 Summer Street in Boston, MA posed a challenge that Marvin was able to solve. The original plan for renovating the old Boston building called for aluminum windows and a pre-fit panning system, but this solution would decrease the glazing square footage and would not meet local historic preservation requirements.
