Founded in 1871, Smith College, a private liberal arts college for women located in Northampton Massachusetts, is deeply rooted in tradition. The historical beauty of the campus, with many buildings dating back over 100 years, is part of that tradition. Naturally, the decision to remodel these 4 story historical dormitories was not a small undertaking.

Since its founding in 1871, Smith College has provided women of high ability and promise an education of uncompromising quality offering world-class faculty and programs, along with a unique breadth of resources and outstanding facilities. Smith offers the best for its students and would only choose the best in its building products.
In 2011, Smith needed to renovate the Gillett and Northrop Houses, two beautiful four and a half story brick and ivy-covered buildings on the main entrance into the campus. Gillett is connected by a covered patio to the Northrop House, which mirrors its image. These two facilities built in 1911 offer students single and suite-style living.
Smith needed to upgrade the facilities to increase the energy efficiency of the buildings, as well as match the original appearance, with increased importance as they welcome visitors into the college’s historic and well-known campus.
The Marvin Solution: Standard Marvin Clad Insert Double Hung Window with custom casings and snap trim to replicate the original. The casings were applied to the window in the R&R Window shop; by doing this in a controlled environment, it ensured better water management once the windows were installed onsite. The remaining perimeter snap trim was applied in the field. The whole process was offered as a turnkey solution to Smith College through R&R Window Contractors, a commercial installing retailer for the Marvin Family of Products.
